South African women show fight

South Africa produced a wonderful bowling display to beat the White Ferns by five wickets in the rain-affected sixth one-day international in Paarl yesterday.

The White Ferns lead the series 4-2, with one match remaining, but the South Africans showed they still have some fight left.

Ayebonga Khaka and Moseline Daniels combined to remove New Zealand openers Rachel Priest (three) and Suzie Bates (three).

Odine Kirsten then picked up the wicket of the dangerous Amy  Satterthwaite for 13 and also trapped Maddy Green lbw for two.

Otago’s Katey Martin resisted with 65 not out but Masabata Klaas took three for 32 to help dismiss the visiting side  for a sub-par total of 130.

It was Martin’s second ODI half-century. Her first came in 2007-08.

Stroke-maker Mignon du Preez took control of the chase with a patient innings of 44.

She  found a willing helper in the form of the captain Dane van Niekerk, who was undefeated on 36.

The final game of the series will be staged at Paarl’s Boland Park tonight, New Zealand time.
