St Kevin’s too strong for Oamaru in cup competition

Defending champions St Kevin’s lead the Borton Cup standings after round two was played over the weekend.

Oamaru were made to regret electing to bat after they were dismissed for 92 runs in 32 overs.

Campbell Fowler took three for 34, Jack Kelly two for two and Jacob Fowler two for five off seven overs for the College pupils.

After Toby Growcott (28) and Jack Kelly (26 not out) put on 50 for the opening wicket, St Kevin’s lost four wickets before they passed Oamaru’s total in the 22nd over.

For Oamaru, Stephan Grobler took two for 32.

Another low-scoring game was played at Milner Park where Waitaki Boys’ struggled against accurate Union bowling.

Batting for 41 overs, they reached only 80 runs.

Alex Wilson top-scored with 26 off 86 deliveries.

Blake James took three for 15 of 10 overs, Scott Kitto ripped through the middle and lower order, taking five for nine off seven overs.

Union veterans Thomas and Jeremiah Shields compiled 32 runs for the opening wicket, but then Waitaki started a fightback, taking a further three wickets for the addition of only eight runs.

Captain Blake James steadied the ship with 24 not out.

Union finished with 81 for four in the 15th over. Hunter Wardle took three for 25 off 4.5 overs.

Glenavy batted first in their first game of the season against Valley, reaching 225 in 50 overs.

Rodney van Leeuwen made 53 of 16 balls, Matt Tangney 46, Jordan Mulligan 24 not out and Kurt Thomas 21.

For Valley, Angus Ruddenklau took four for 41 and Jack Cameron captured two for 24 off 10 overs.

Valley struggled to gain ascendancy, losing wickets at key times. Shannon Dunnett made 49 and Dallas Mahuika 47.

Kurt Thomas took three for 40, Stafford Adams two for two and Ross McCulloch two for 51.

Valley were all out for 158 from 33 overs, 68 runs short of victory.
