Sam Horgan was brought down in a late Cat 1 crash but hung on to win the 30th Tamahine R&R two-day cycling tour over the weekend.

More than 80 riders from around the South Island descended on Otago to race in four categories: Cats 1, 2, 3 and women-only.

The tour opened with the 10km prologue time trial around the Woodside circuit. Reon Park completed the course in 13min 14sec, with Alex McGregor 7sec behind. The gap in Cat 2 was a mere 2sec between first-placed Mike Lormans and Brad Evans in second. David Lont showed his ability by taking 27sec out of Stephen Beeby in Cat 3.

The first road stage had the riders climbing Berwick hill, three times for Cat 1 and twice for the other grades.

McGregor crashed but got back on the bike, while at the front it came down to a bunch sprint, with Jason Allen pipping Joe Chapman at the line.

In Cat 2, Evans attacked off the front heading back towards Outram. He was closed down this time and, in a sprint finish, Michael White took the honours from Gus Kerr.

Colton Lambert won the Cat 3 bunch sprint.

In the women's race, Gaby Vermont pipped Kathryn Jones and Carolyn Jenkins to second and third respectively.

In the final stage of the day, the course was flat save for a 1.5km stretch up the hill towards Middlemarch.

The Cat 2 riders were the first up the hill, with Evans taking time out of Lormans to gain the yellow jersey, while Tony Fowler held on to win the stage.

At the bottom of the hill, Vermont attacked in the women's race. Jenkins got on to her wheel and set the tempo but Vermont tucked in behind and pasted Jenkins on the last section of the climb to take the win.

Lont held off a determined Lambert to win Cat 3.

It was then down to Cat 1 to ascend the hill, at a pace that blew the field apart; however, Park did enough to stay in yellow overnight.

Sunday's stage 4 took the riders from Green Island to Taieri Mouth, then back to to Waldronville to finish up the gruelling Blackhead Rd.

Disaster struck leader Park, who went over a road barrier at 50kmh, sustaining injuries that have ended his tour.

When racing resumed, Sam Horgan took the win and the leader's jersey by 1sec from Ashley Whitehead. Evans increased his lead in Cat 2, and Will Buchanan had a narrow win in Cat 3.

Vermont was the first of the women, with Jenkins again second.

So it was pack up and in to the city for the Crit race around the wharf.

Vermont held on to the lead to take out the overall women's win.

In Cat 3, Lont attacked but was passed in the sprint by Lambert; however, Lont finished first overall, 2min 10sec ahead of second-placed Lambert.

Evans had to ride down a gallant Tom Fowler in the sprint to win Cat 2.

In Cat 1, Horgan and Whitehead set the pace until a crash two corners from home brought down three riders, including Horgan.

Tom Scully took out the sprint, but with the crash occurring so close to the finish, Horgan held on to claim the overall win.
