Wanaka  rider Mikayla Harvey has been named in the New Zealand team for next month's world championships in Austria.

Harvey has also been confirmed as being the sole New Zealand woman competing in the time trial.

She will team up with Georgia Williams and Grace Anderson.

Williams is back on her bike following a crash, which resulted in a fractured hip and sacrum, and hopes to be fit for the world championships. She has been named in the team time trial and will make her decision to compete in both the individual time trial and road race based closer to the date, based on her fitness.

Harvey has enjoyed a strong international season after winning the under-23 time trial at the Oceania Championships and finishing second in the youth classification in the Santos Women's Tour. Riding for Team Illuminate, she was third in the mountain classification at the Guizhou Road Race in China and sixth in the youth classification at the Amgen Tour of California.

There is no women's under-23 grade at the world championships.

Nelson rider George Bennett will head the men's team, with Hamish Bond lining up in the time trial.

The mountainous course for the world championships in Innsbruck is expected to challenge Bennett and Cycling New Zealand has assembled a team of riders to help him in the September 30 road race.

Experienced professional cyclists Sam Bewley, Patrick Bevin and Dion Smith, who have all raced a Grand Tour this year, will support Bennett in the four-strong team.

Bevin, who has been in superb form this year, will join Oceania Champion and Commonwealth Games medallist Bond in the individual time trial on September 26.

Bennett enjoyed a satisfying day to finish fifth on the 163km second stage of the Vuelta a Espana yesterday.

Bennett, riding for LottoNL-Jumbo, was credited with the same time as stage winner Alejandro Valverde.

Poland's Michal Kwiatkowski, who finished second to the Spaniard, moved into the leader's red jersey.

Bennett is 18th overall, 45sec behind the leader. - Additional reporting RNZ
