League champion Caversham is just two wins away from completing a perfect season in the Football South Premier League after an entertaining 3-2 victory over Dunedin Technical at Tahuna Park on Saturday.

Caversham made it 16 wins from as many matches but was made to work hard for the three points in another evenly contested match between the two great rivals.

Caversham scored its three goals in a nine-minute push either side of the halftime break, book-ended by Technical’s opener and late second goal.

Technical probably had the better of the first half  A few chances went begging before it finally scored  the opener through Ash Watson with only a few minutes of the half remaining.

The striker, who has been impressive since his mid-season arrival at the club, was sent through on goal and slotted it past goalkeeper Liam Little.

Technical coach Tony Martin would have been pleased to have taken a one-goal lead into the break, but Caversham had other ideas, and Sam Cosgrave scored at the far post in injury time after good lead-up play from Lewis Jackson to tie it up.

It got better for the visiting side just a couple of minutes into the second half when forward Tore Waechter gave it the lead with an excellent header from a Cosgrave cross.

Technical was rocked again minutes when later Jackson squared the ball to Sam Collier, who scored Caversham’s third goal to put it 3-1 up and in a strong position.

Technical continued to apply pressure and got some reward with 15 minutes to play with a goal to defender Andrew Douglas.

However, it was unable to find an equaliser.

Goalscorer Waechter was man of the match for the winning side, but assistant coach Richard Murray also picked out Collier and midfielder Jared Grove as standout performers.

The win moved Caversham 11 points clear of Technical and Mosgiel.

To complete a perfect season, the champion will this week need to beat a Mosgiel side fighting to take second spot outright, and then cellar dweller Green Island.

In the only other match, Roslyn Wakari had an impressive 9-0 victory over University at the Caledonian.

Roslyn finds itself once more stranded right in the middle of the league table but, on this form, it showed just what its young side is capable of on its day, with an excellent display of fast attacking football.

The main star was striker Tennessee Kinghorn, who bagged five goals to rocket himself into the race for the Golden Boot award.

The former Green Island youngster’s pace was a constant threat to the student defence and he showed some great composure with clinical finishing.

Fellow striker James Govan bagged two goals in just two minutes, Nathan Wilkie scored with a spectacular bicycle kick, and Rupert Mark scored the best goal of the game with a scorcher from 30m.

With one final match against Technical still to play, Roslyn season reads eight wins and nine losses,  without a single draw.

In fact, there have only been two draws across the entire league so far this season.
