Five age-group sides to take on best at nationals

The South’s best young footballers are set to test themselves on the national stage.

Five teams from Football South will be represented at the national age-group tournament in Wellington starting today and running until Sunday.

They will play in the boys under-14, 15 and 16 grades, as well as in the girls under-14 and 16.

The tournament will involve Football South playing against the other six federations around the country and acts as a pathway for the country’s top young talent.

Results from all five grades are put together to determine the overall standings.

Trials for the teams were held at Molyneux Park in Alexandra in August and resulted in 87 players selected across the teams.

They included players from Otago, Southland, Central Otago, Waitaki and South Canterbury.

Several of the region’s top players and coaches are coaching the teams.

Football development officers and Southern United players Danny Ledwith, Stephen Last and Conor O’Keeffe are head coaching the three boys teams.

Southern United women’s coach Terry Parle and Southern United goalkeeper and women’s goalkeeping coach Tom Stevens are coaching the girls teams.
