All Whites and Phoenix coach Ricki Herbert cannot wait to check out the new covered stadium in Dunedin.

But he might just take a minute first to check the showers have hot water.

Herbert will bring his Wellington Phoenix team to Forsyth Barr Stadium next week to play the Brisbane Roar, with the August 20 pre-season fixture to be the first game of football at the stadium.

Playing under a roof, and enjoying brand-new facilities, will be a far cry from Herbert's visits to Dunedin in the 1980s, as a club player and with the All Whites for a test against Australia in 1988.

"Most of the time we played at the old Caledonian in those days," Herbert told the Otago Daily Times from Wellington.

"You'd get changed in those concrete dressing rooms, with cold showers, and then head out to a pretty frosty reception, on and off the field."

Herbert said the Phoenix was excited to be given the opportunity to play the first football game at the stadium.

"It's very exciting. I haven't seen the stadium live but it looks fantastic.

"It's a real honour for us to be able to get down there so early in the piece and play the first major football game there.

"And it's a good chance to take the team around the country, too. Hopefully, the fans are looking forward to it."

The Phoenix has played at Melbourne's AAMI Stadium, which has a dome roof covering much of the seating area, but Herbert said it was "very, very rare" to see a football game held at a completely covered venue.

He has 15 players on full A-League contracts, with other players on trial.

Herbert said he would be bringing a full-strength squad to Dunedin, meaning the likes of English star Paul Ifill, Australian defenders Andrew Durante and Manny Muscat, and All Whites Mark Paston, Tony Lochhead, Ben Sigmund, Tim Brown and Leo Bertos will play at the stadium.

The Phoenix has a low-key training game on the Kapiti Coast this weekend but the Dunedin game, against the defending champion Roar, will be more serious.

"It's part of our full pre-season programme and it will be good for us to measure up against last year's champions," Herbert said.

"It's good for the players to get out there and play against some of their rivals. The guys are hungry to get on to the park."

The Phoenix squad will arrive on Thursday and hold a couple of training sessions before the Saturday game. The Roar players also arrive on Thursday.

More than 5000 tickets have been sold for the game, which kicks off at 5.30pm.
