Mexico has claimed a stunning 2-1 win in the Fifa Under-20 World Cup group D clash at Otago Stadium today.
At 1-1 after 90 minutes, a draw seemed certain, until a magical piece of skill from Kevin Gutierrez.
The Mexican defender swirled an inch-perfect free kick into the top right of the Uruguayan goal from just outside the box.
It was a massive moment for the Mexicans, who had dominated the game and needed to bank three points after a loss in their opening game.
Mexico scored first through a lovely goal from fleet-footed winger Hirving Lozano, an early contender for player of the tournament, in the 71st minute.
Lozano swooped on a mistake, darted down the flank and cut inside to bury a shot into the net with his left foot.
It seemed destined to remain 1-0, given Uruguay was struggling just to get the ball.
Turns out all Uruguay needed was a free kick and a player with one of the most famous surnames in world football.
With seven minutes to play, a set piece led to a firm shot and a cracking save from the Mexican keeper, but the rebound fell straight into the path of Mathias Suarez, who buried it with force.
Both sides were guilty of wasting some excellent opportunities in a free-flowing first half.
Mexico, who had 66% possession in the first 45 minutes, were particularly guilty of not capitalising on their chances.
The best opportunity in the first half fell to Lozano, who showed his speed and aerial skills to latch on to a cross but could only direct his header on to the bar.
Uruguay struggled in the midfield but should probably have been 1-0 up at the break.
Mexican goalkeeper Jose Gonzalez flubbed a clearance and Uruguay forward Franco Acosta struck his shot wide.
