Roslyn-Wakari fought back from a goal down to beat Southland United in a bruising encounter on a bumpy Ellis Park in the Otago Daily Times premier league on Saturday.

Despite having more chances and possession, Roslyn conceded a goal on the half hour mark and Southland held the one goal advantage at halftime.

The second half was end-to-end, with chances aplenty for both teams, and it took Tennessee Kinghorn to restore parity when he squeezed in a rebound to equalise on 70 minutes.

Then with 10 minutes to go, Kinghorn scored the winner from the penalty spot for the 2-1 win.

League champion Caversham celebrated its title with a commanding 6-1 victory over University.

It was one-way traffic from Caversham as it bounced back from its first defeat in the league for two years last week.

In the clash between Dunedin Technical and Northern at Tahuna Park, the game was decided by a devastating 10-minute spell before halftime, when Technical scored four quick goals.

There was no way back for Northern, which did score a goal in the second half.  The game ended  as a 5-1 win for Dunedin Technical.

Northern coach Arran Wilkinson was pleased with his side’s second-half response, but the old adage of when struggling at the bottom, both luck and opportunities are against you, is a reflection of his side’s season.

After its win over Caversham last week, Green Island would have fancied itself to beat Mosgiel at Sunnyvale and it won a close game 2-1.

Being a derby game, Craig Whitson had his Mosgiel team primed and it was a close and even game throughout. It took until the 40th minute before  Max Johnson ran on to a long ball and slotted home from close range, to give Green Island a 1-0 lead.

Mosgiel responded well with pace  on the flanks from Sam McCauley and Charlie Gruppelaar and when a foul was committed  in the penalty box right on halftime, Mosgiel thought it would have the chance to equalise. But appeals were ignored.

Mosgiel started the second half in ascendancy and it was no surprise when Conor Neil equalised on  55 minutes, following a great run from Riley Anderton.

At this point Green Island was hanging on and a fine performance in the middle of defence by Blake Porteous and strong hands by goalkeeper Stu Catto were keeping Mosgiel at bay.

McCauley once again got in behind the defence and his lobbed shot struck the crossbar, bounced on the line and stayed out. Sam Dore was having a strong game in the midfield for Green Island and was booked on 65 minutes. On 68 minutes Neil had a shot cannon back off the post. The officials had a busy game and another penalty appeal for Mosgiel was not given.

Green  Island scored the clincher on 79 minutes, when  a long, raking diagonal ball into Mosgiel’s penalty box was met by Matt Brazier.

The home team almost made it three when a free kick from Max Johnson — which turned out to be the last kick of the match — struck the post.
