Roslyn remains on top after beating Northern 4-1

Mosgiel and Caversham played out a draw on Saturday while Roslyn Wakari and Green Island both claimed wins.

Caversham was without regulars Andrew Ridden, Aaron Corkhill and Alan McBride but still started strongly. However Sean McDonald in Mosgiel’s goal was defying its attempts, along with Andreas Hirczy in defence, who was blocking shot after shot. Mosgiel absorbed the pressure and after a fine passing move the ball was crossed to Regan Coldicott who nodded it back into the path of Riley Anderton, who darted in ahead of Caversham’s keeper Zane Green and rolled the ball home to take a 1-0 lead at the break. Caversham continued to threaten in the second half, but was not taking its chances until Conor Neil finally netted the equaliser on 87 minutes when he rounded McDonald to make the full time score 1-1.

Green Island left it late to secure the three points that took it to second place in the league on nine points. Despite a strong start with many chances created in the first 20 minutes, Thomas Gray in University’s goal denied the Island time and time again. University was moving the ball around well and nearly took the lead following a lovely through ball and a shot which struck the post. Green Island also hit the woodwork and it remained 0-0 at halftime.

With only 11 minutes remaining, Green Island delivered a cross into the penalty box and Matt Brazier got in front of Gray and turned on the spot to pass into an empty net. The second goal came moments later, when A nice through ball found Chris Kessell, who calmly slotted the ball past the advancing  keeper, to make it 2-0 with seven minutes to go.  Cam Sinclair came on and was on the score sheet minutes later when he latched on to another through ball and lobbed the ball over Gray to make the final result 3-0.

Roslyn and Northern played out a scrappy first half at Forrester Park where both teams created a couple of chances. Roslyn’s diminutive Cam Anderson opened the scoring from close range in the last act of the first half. Roslyn looked more comfortable on the ball in the second half and Tennessee Kinghorn latched on to a long straight ball and slotted home to go 2-0.

Northern reduced the deficit when Ryan Hawken scored after a cleverly taken indirect free kick. Roslyn soon restored the two-goal buffer after Cam Anderson cut in from the left, beat four players on the edge of the box and fired a bullet home. Ben O’Farrell topped off the win with a 40m free kick that sailed into the far corner.

Roslyn remains top of the league with 10 points after four rounds.
