The southern challenge ended in the Chatham Cup on Saturday, when both Caversham and Queenstown Rovers lost.

Any thoughts of Nelson struggling in wintry Queenstown were quickly dispelled as the Nelson side ran away with the game, winning 6-1.

Caversham travelled to Christchurch and went down 2-0 to Cashmere-Technical.

Queenstown's coach Jamie Whitmarsh was making no excuses despite not being able to train on the side's home pitch for a month due to the recent British and Irish Lions tour.

He fielded what he thought was the best line-up to counter Nelson's threats.

Queenstown struggled to find any fluency and, with Nelson pressing, the team from Tasman scored two goals within five minutes about halfway through the first half.

The first was a penalty and the second a nice finish from the top of the box.

A third goal just before halftime virtually ended the game as a contest as Queenstown lost possession at key times.

Gareth Beale got a goal back for Queenstown but Nelson continued to score and went away a deserving winner.

Cashmere-Technical is a quality side so it was going to be a tough task for Caversham.

The opening period was quite cagey with both teams testing and probing, looking for weaknesses.

Cashmere got its first break when Michael White scored on 10 minutes, when his shot took a slight deflection. This gave the home team the advantage and it could have been ahead more by halftime.

A scintillating run from Cashmere youngster Lyle Matthysen on 58 minutes caused mayhem in the Caversham defence and his cross was met by unfortunate Caversham defender Craig Ferguson for an own goal.

Caversham made changes and threw players forward in the last 15 minutes and enjoyed its best spell. But it did not create enough opportunities to rattle the Christchurch team's defence and Cashmere held on to win and progress into the quarterfinals.

In Dunedin competition, a stunning Michael Neaverson strike and two excellent goals from George McCall proved to be the difference as Dunedin Technical won 3-1 at Ellis Park over Roslyn-Wakari.

An evenly contested first half was scoreless.

However, the game opened up in the second half and both keepers were regularly tested.

Neaverson's strike broke the deadlock and McCall added a second, only for Tennessee Kinghorn to respond for Roslyn. McCall's second goal, in the 87th minute, settled the game in favour of Technical.

University entertained Mosgiel on the Caledonian and Mosgiel was looking comfortable, thanks to first half goals from Isaac Snell and Riley Anderton.

However, a penalty right on halftime was converted by the very impressive University No 10 Chris Kessell. Any thoughts for a University comeback were quickly quashed in the 48th minute, when Sam Macaulay made it 3-1.

University reduced the deficit with seven minutes to go. However, Zane Green in Mosgiel's goal made sure the students went home empty-handed.
