Southern women complete double with 1-0 win over Central

Southern United carved out a 1-0 win over Central in Palmerston North yesterday.

Having beat Central 6-0 in the opening game of the season at Logan Park, hopes were high of Southern doing the double over Central.

It started out the stronger side, applying early pressure to Central's defensive line.

After a few chances went just wide for Southern, striker Amy Hislop capitalised with a chipped shot that gave them the lead in the 17th minute.

Despite the blistering heat both teams battled hard.

In the second half Central keeper Bennett pulled out some great saves in multiple one-on-one situations to stop Southern from securing three points.

Lena De Ronde and Erin Roxburgh both made their first starting XI for Southern this season and impressed the coaching staff with the effort they put in.

Southern remains two points behind both Auckland and Northern Lights as the teams head into round nine of the season.

The women will host WaiBOP next Sunday.
