Southern United's Ben Wade has taken a step towards pulling on a white jersey.

The 22-year-old forward has been included in the New Zealand under-23 men's identification camp in Auckland later this month.

It will act as part of the preparations to qualify for next year's Tokyo Olympics. The qualification tournament will be in Fiji from September 21 to October 5.

Wade has played national league football over the past three years.

Last season he was often injected as a dynamic presence in the second half for Southern United.

He is playing for Caversham in the Southern Football League.

The under-23 side is coached by Des Buckingham, who spent five days in Dunedin recently.

A squad to travel to Australia will be named in mid-August and two matches will follow in early September.

A further talent identification camp will be held on August 26-29.
