Women’s sides set to join cup day

One of southern football’s most prestigious trophies now has a women’s equivalent.

The Kiwi-Panda Cup will be contested alongside the Chinese Charity Cup for the first time.

The games will be played back-to-back at Forsyth Barr Stadium tomorrow, creating what is to become an annual Chinese Charity Cup Day.

Each cup is to be contested by the top two finishers in the second-tier southern leagues.

The Dunedin Tech Whites will play the Roslyn Wakari Reserves for the Kiwi-Panda Cup at 12.30pm.

At 3pm, the Otago University 2nds will play the Mosgiel 2nds in the Chinese Charity Cup match.

The cups aim to promote diversity and inclusion.

Food and entertainment will be provided by the Otago Chinese community.

The Chinese Charity Cup was first played for in 1925.

It was presented by the Dunedin Chinese community as a sign of appreciation of the welcoming treatment given to a touring Chinese university team.
