Former Otago representative James Anstiss is one of 10 New Zealand amateurs selected to compete in this year's Asia-Pacific Amateur Championship on the Royal Wellington course on October 26-29.

The winner of the event will have a chance to secure a place in the 2018 Masters tournament at Augusta as well as the 147th British Open at Carnoustie next year.

It is the first time New Zealand has hosted the event which will attract 120 leading amateurs from the 40 Asia-Pacific Golf Federation member organisations.

Royal Wellington, formerly known as Heretaunga, was founded in 1895 and the course for the championship will be a par-72 layout measuring 6601m.

The New Zealanders are chosen from their world amateur rankings with Nick Voke at 61st in top place after performing well at Iowa State University this year.

Anstiss is in seventh place after some good performances at South-Eastern Louisiana University during his final scholarship year.

His most recent success was in the North South matchplay event at Pinehurst No2 where he lost in the final.

He also came in as runner-up in the All American category A championships, fifth in the Louisiana Amateur, ninth in the W.E. Cole Cotton States invitational and 13th in the David Toms Intercollegiate event.

Anstiss grew up in Queenstown and represented Otago at No2 in the national interprovincial tournament at North Shore in 2013.

The Otago selectors were looking forward to Anstiss returning for this year's interprovincial event in Northland but he has adopted a programme which may help embark him on the professional career.
