New Zealanders David Smail and Michael Campbell have had a less than impressive start on the first day of the United States PGA Championship in Chaska, Minnesota.

Smail shot a three-over par 75 at the Hazeltine National Golf Club, a double bogey at the first hole setting the tone for a patchy performance.

Bogeys at the fourth, eighth and 15th were lightened only by birdies at the seventh and 10th.

Campbell, the 2005 US Open champion, continued his struggle to find any sort of form, carding an eight-over par 80 in a round peppered with bogeys and double bogeys.

Tiger Woods holds the early clubhouse lead after roaring round in a five-under 67, one shot ahead of defending champion Padraig Harrington.
