Golf: Otago 10th in Freyberg

Waikato won the Freyberg Masters (over-40) men's interprovincial on the Maraenui course in Napier yesterday. It was unbeaten.

Otago had a loss and a win on the final day to finish 10th.

Otago remained winless against Canterbury in the morning, with two halves and three losses.

Andrew Hobbs, at No 1, halved with Canterbury's Scott Rithcie, while Otago No 5, Kyle Geary, finished all square with Jason Sincock.

But the rest of the games went Canterbury's way, with Gary Creedy losing on the final green, while Stephen Hitchcox lost 3 and 2 and John McIntee went down to Paul Bailey on the 15th green.

Otago rebounded in the afternoon, beating Manawatu-Wanganui 3 to 2 to finish the week with two wins and a half.

Hobbs lost to Malcolm Wells on the 17th green and Creedy went down to Stuart Smith by the same 2 and 1 margin.

Hitchcox beat Tony Chettleburgh with two holes to spare, while Geary posted a 4 and 3 win over Rick Barling.

John McIntee went on to the bench for the final round, leaving Greg Johnson to get Otago home in a tight tussle with Chris Treen.

Johnson clung to his northern opponent and finished in front with a 1-up win on the final green.

• Danny Lee will need to produce something special if he is to hold on to his US PGA Tour card for next year after making a poor start to the Children's Miracle Network Hospitals Classic at Lake Buena Vista, Florida, yesterday, APNZ reported.

The New Zealand No 1 carded a 2-over-par 74 in the opening round to lie in a share of 96th, 10 shots off the lead.

Lee started the tournament 164th on the PGA Tour money list with $US359,111 and needs a top-three finish to climb into the top 125 to retain his card for 2013. A place in the top 150 would be good enough to earn conditional status next year.

The alternative is heading to qualifying school to remain on the PGA Tour.
