Southland came home strongly to win its annual battle against Otago in Gore in Sunday.
With a slim lead going into the afternoon round, Otago could manage only three points and so lost the Salisbury Cup to Southland 8.5-7.5.
In the morning singles, Susan Greig, Joanna Booker, Brenda Sutherland and Becky Slade beat their opponents while Amy Johns contributed a valuable half to enable Otago to lead by one going into the afternoon singles.
But in the afternoon, wins by Johns and Booker and halves by Greig and Sutherland were not enough to retain the Salisbury Cup, Otago losing one point.
No1 Greig was unbeaten for Otago as were No4 Johns, No6 Booker and No7 Sutherland.
Southland did not rely on one player, none of its players having two wins. Robyn Pullar drew in the afternoon after winning in the morning.
Otago's next outing is the South Island interprovincial tournament in Blenheim in two weeks.
