High achievers to be recognised

Oturehua, Blackstone Hill and Ida Valley will celebrate their national representatives when a special honours board is unveiled at the Oturehua Hall  during Labour Weekend.

The honours board will reflect 125 years of sporting achievements at the highest level by members of the community.

It will feature 35 individual names of those who have represented New Zealand, and in some cases won national team or individual titles across nine different sports.

Some of the sports represented are less well-known, and can be said to be "climate-related",  such as curling, ice-skating and ice hockey.

But the region has also produced some  fine cricket, rugby and hockey players.

The honours board includes administrators as well as sportsmen and women.

The criteria requires people to have had a strong association with the district, and  those who have won New Zealand titles or have played in New Zealand teams.

Others recognised on the honours board include office bearers and administrators of national teams and New Zealand sporting bodies.

The mahogany honours board will be displayed permanently inside the Oturehua hall and a photographic replica will be mounted outside.

About 180 people are expected to cram into the hall on October 23.

Some guests are expected  from as far away as Townsville and Darwin.

New Zealand cricket great Glenn Turner will be the guest speaker.
