The Black Sticks men  are stopping  off in Kuala Lumpur for a week in the leadup to the men’s Hockey World Cup.

The Black Sticks will play three games against Malaysia to polish off their preparations. The Malaysian team is on a high after recently finishing third in the Asian Games in Oman. The series shapes as a close battle between the world No12, Malaysia, and world No9 Black Sticks. Malaysia will look to get itself into a good position where Muhammad Razie Abd Rahim will seek to convert some powerful flicks against the two Black Sticks keepers, Richard Joyce and George Enersen.

Malaysia is coached by former Indian, Netherlands and Pakistan coach Roelant Oltman, who brings a vast amount of experience to the  side, having won both the Hockey World Cup and Olympic gold medal  in that role. The Black Sticks will be seeking to build some positive momentum from this series, so they can hit the ground running at the World Cup.

Southern’s Kane Russell returns to the national team having missed the recent Canada series as he was playing  in Europe. He brings plenty of experience and an excellent drag flick.  The opening match was to be played last night.
