Both Otago teams open accounts at nationals

Otago  is on the board at the national tournament in Whangarei.

Both the men's and women's teams had victories yesterday after disappointing starts to the tournament at the weekend.

Yesterday, the men's team beat Waikato 2-1 with two goals in the middle period of the match.

Andrew Beverland scored the opening goal for Otago and Vinnie O'Connor scored shortly afterwards to give Otago a two-goal cushion, although Waikato got a goal back in the final quarter. The men's team had lost 6-1 to Canterbury in its opening game.

The women's team had lost 8-0 to Canterbury to start the tournament on Saturday and then lost 4-0 to Tasman late on Sunday night.

But it came back well yesterday, and beat Waikato 3-2, scoring three goals after finding itself 2-0 down.

It was down 2-0 after two quarters but came back to tie up the match with two goals from penalty corners by Annabel Girvan.

Hannah McLean scored the goal to win the game for Otago, a field goal, with just three minutes left to play.

The Otago men will play North Harbour today while the women have a bye before entering post-section play tomorrow.
