First loss for Otago

Otago suffered its first defeat at the national under-18 men’s championships in Palmerston North yesterday.

It was edged 2-1 by Wellington in its final Pool C game.

Jack Cotton banged in his seventh goal of the tournament to give his side a 1-0 lead, but Wellington rallied with two late goals. Despite the loss, Otago topped the pool and will play North Harbour 1 in the semifinals today.

At the national under-18 women’s championships in Nelson, Otago beat Southland 4-1 to finish in second place in pool D. Otago Country was well-beaten 8-0 by Canterbury 2 in pool A.
