Kings secures shield for summer

The Kings United men locked up the Challenge Shield for the summer after a 2-0 win over the University Whales in the Dunedin premier competition on Saturday.

William McNaughtan scored the opening goal for Kings, but the Whales fought back with a number of penalty corners.

With the score still 1-0 late in the game, the Whales decided to pull their keeper up in a last-ditch effort to find an equaliser.

Unfortunately, it did not have the desired effect, and Kings sealed the deal with a Zach Mason goal.

The Albany Alligators beat the University Panthers 5-0.

Albany opened its scoring through some clean post play from Jack Cotton.

Josh Smith then scored twice, and Josh Stevens and Tom French completed the emphatic win for Albany.

In the final men’s game, the Taieri Tuataras punished visiting Tainui 9-2.

Finn Ward opened the scoring inside three minutes to set the tone for the game.

The goals continued from there; Ward picked up a second, his brothers Patrick and Jordan both scored, and Cam Sims and Mathew Deller also managed to beat Ben Sinnamon in goal for Tainui.

Solomon Baldock added a hat-trick for the Tuataras to really put the game to bed.

Tainui tried to mount a comeback, scoring twice through Nick Dalziel, but the Tuataras were too strong.

In the women’s competition, Momona secured second place on the points table after a 4-1 win over Kings United.

Momona went up 2-0 early in the first quarter courtesy of some attacking composure from Louisa Kotkamp.

Kings earned a penalty corner late in the third quarter, and Georgia Roy managed to find the back of the net.

Any hint of a comeback was snuffed out though when Kotkamp scored again, and the game was secured for Momona when Lucy Sawers pounced at penalty corner time late in the game.

The City Highlanders beat the Taieri Tigers 2-0. Sarah Thomas returned to form to score twice.

The Huskies beat the Stingrays 4-0 in the University derby.

Ella Greenwood (two), Rose Parkinson and Maia Shackelford scored goals for the Huskies.
