NZ to open World League Semi Final against Spain

The Black Sticks women's side will play Spain in its opening match in the World League Semi Final tournament tomorrow.

New Zealand has been placed in the same pool as Australia, Belgium, Malaysia and Spain for the tournament in Brussels.

To guarantee a place in the World League Final, teams will need to finish in the top three in Brussels, while a top-five finish will also guarantee qualification for the World Cup in 2018.

However, as the World League Final is taking place in Auckland in late November, New Zealand has already qualified for the event.

But a good performance in Brussels will put the Black Sticks in a good place to qualify for the World Cup in London next year.

New Zealand and Australia are the top-ranked sides in its pool and should be confident of going through to the semifinals.

The Netherlands, which plays in the other pool, will be the team to beat at the tournament.

With the New Zealand side failing to beat Spain in a warm-up series this month, the side will have to up its form to be in with a shot.

The team, which will be captained by the experienced Stacey Michelsen, has a total of 10 players who have tallied more than 100 test caps.

The match against Spain will start at 6am tomorrow.

All games will be broadcast on Sky Sport.
