Southland's experience key in win

Southland consolidated fourth place in the premier women's competition on Saturday when it defeated Uni A for the second time this season.

With eight teams in the grade this season, there is a bit of a logjam in the middle of the table, so these three points could be crucial in a few weeks when the top four are decided.

Southland jumped out to an early lead and held on to its 1-0 margin for the remainder of the first half.

It appeared to have the better of the midfield battle, and its extra experience playing as a team for more than just this year came to the fore.

This year's Huskies side is mostly new and it has struggled to build as a cohesive unit.

Play evened up in the second half but it was Southland which scored again to go 2-0 up.

Ash McNaughton got one back for Uni in the last 10 minutes but to no avail.

The goal-scorers for the Barbarians were Amy Heaps and Celia Dickie.

Southland again showed how its senior women's team competed well at national tournament.

In other games this weekend, Momona beat Southern U18 4-0, City Highlanders downed Kings United 8-0 and Taieri defeated Uni B 4-0.
