Uni keeps Stingrays scoreless

City Highlanders Women continued their recent march forward with a third big win in a row, this time comfortably putting away Uni B 6-0.

It was a reduced round of games this week with the national under-21 tournament starting in Auckland and the second round of the games in Gore leaving only two matches in Dunedin this weekend.

City started the stronger of the two sides and, as so often when it gets on a roll, was very hard to stop. The midfield, controlled by Deborah Yung, would not let Uni build any play.

While the Stingrays came out firing and appeared to be holding their own initially, they were not able to match the accuracy of the team in orange.

The goals came in bunches as City pressed hard and high, extracting turnovers from the Uni defence. Whenever Uni tried to build pressure of its own, a small error would halt its momentum.

It did have periods of attack, mostly highlighted by individual skill, but was unable to bring it together.

For City, sisters Sarah and Becky Thomas scored doubles, while Alex Irwin and Liv Preston also got on the card.

Tessa Wylie drove most of Uni's play and Ashlee Greenhalgh showed good skill up front. Claire McGregor also had another good game in goal for the Stingrays.

In the other match, Uni A put away Kings United 7-1, while in Gore, Southland got over the top of Southern U18 3-2. The Momona v Taieri game has been deferred until May 19.

Standings: City and Momona 15 points, Taieri 12, Southland 10, Uni A 7, Uni B and U18s 4, Kings United 0.
