The Southern under-18 development team congratulates goalkeeper Lachlan Colquhoun after he won the semifinal shootout with a save in Auckland last week.

The team brought a rare medal home for Southern sides from national hockey tournaments.

In the 16-team association tournament, Southern was not fancied to make it out of pool play.

But it scored four straight wins to get through to the semifinal.

It then tied 4-4 with South Canterbury before winning the shootout 3-0.

Top goalscorer was Southland’s Blair McKenzie with six goals, and Billy Ellwood scored five goals.

In the final it lost 4-3 to Canterbury.

In the regional under-18 tournament the male team finished sixth and the women’s team eighth.
