The Dunedin Thunder and the Stampede have an opportunity to consolidate their spots in the top half of the table this weekend.

The Thunder travels to Christchurch and will play  the bottom-of-the-table Canterbury Red Devils in back-to-back matches.

The Red Devils have one win from six games, while the Thunder also has just one win but has two games in hand.

Thunder coach Matt Hladun felt the Christchurch-based team would be stiffer competition than its results suggest.

"They have had a tough schedule and played some of the top teams. And I think this is their first home game," he said.

"We are definitely not taking them lightly."

The Thunder may be without star import Easton Oliver, who is carrying a niggly injury. And fellow defender Pierre-Luc Coulombe has a knee complaint.

They will travel with the side but a decision on their availability will be made later today.

The Stampede was scheduled to play the Botany Swarm last night and the teams will play again tonight. The Stampede (nine points) has three wins from four games and can close the gap on the undefeated Auckland Admirals (18 points) with a couple of good results.

The Swarm has one win from four matches but had a 7-0 win in its most recent outing.
