Queenstown ice hockey-playing brothers Lachlan and Mitchell Frear have been banned for two years after buying the prohibited stimulant clenbuterol.

They are the first cases heard following the revelation in the weekend that more than 100 athletes registered with national sporting organisations had been caught illegally purchasing stimulants from the website clenbuterol.co.nz.

The website's owner Joshua Francis Townshend was jailed for two years after a Medsafe investigation.

More than 80 of the athletes are expected to face either the New Zealand Sports Tribunal or Rugby Judiciary.

The brothers pleaded guilty saying they ordered the product but neither of them admitted using it. Both of them bought the product to reduce weight.

The brothers played for the Stampede this year as the side won its third national title in a row.
