Thunder starts account with two from two

The Dunedin Thunder has opened its season with a winning weekend.

It followed Friday's overtime victory with a second overtime win over the West Auckland Admirals at the Dunedin Ice Stadium on Saturday.

The scores were tied 2-2 before Jacob Hurring, Parker Evans-Campbell and Colton McCarthy all scored in the penalty shootout to edge in front.

Meanwhile, goalkeeper Henri Tikkanen proved equally important in keeping the Admirals out.

Sean McLean gave the Thunder the lead in the first period, before Joe Orr doubled that in the second.

However, Andrew Spiller hit back in the third period for the Admirals, before David Nippard made it 2-2 in the final minutes.

After the overtime period went scoreless, McCarthy and Evans-Campbell put the Thunder up 2-0 in the penalty shootout.

Justin Daigle got one back for the Admirals, but Tikkanen was able to hold up Nippard and allowed Hurring to slot the winner.

Friday's 6-5 overtime win was over the same opponent.
