Cream of teen South Island talent in city

Dunedin will host the annual South Island under-15 and under-17 tournaments which start on Saturday and go for three days.

The tournaments are at Logan Park with games starting at 9.30am on all three days.

The two finals will be at Forsyth Barr Stadium on Monday afternoon.

The competitions will involve the cream of teenage rugby league talent from throughout the South Island competing under the watchful eyes of selectors, National Rugby League club scouts and South Island age-grade selectors.

Each grade will have four districts - Canterbury, Southland, Otago and West Coast - playing in a round robin with the top two teams playing in a final.

The tournaments provide players with the opportunity of competing at a level that allows them to challenge themselves against their peers.

Past tournaments have resulted in players being identified and provided with further opportunities to follow their dreams - be it into an NRL club or New Zealand age-grade teams.

Otago's Rory Ferguson is a recent local example. He was identified while at the tournament.

Following the tournaments, two South Island squads will be named. They will train in preparation for the National Youth Tournament in Rotorua in October.

For the past three years, the South Island sides have both finished in the top three or four sides in their respective grades alongside the three Auckland-based teams which attend.
