League: Injury rules out Price, Fai on bench

The New Zealand Warriors will be without inspirational skipper Steve Price against Parramatta on Sunday for their first home match of the National Rugby League (NRL) season.

Price lasted only 17 minutes of the 32-18 first-round defeat to defending champions Melbourne on Monday night.

The prop left the field with a torn hamstring and is scheduled to have a scan tomorrow, with the results expected later this week.

With Price unavailable, coach Ivan Cleary yesterday brought second rower Sonny Fai on to the bench in the only change to the Warriors' 17.

Fai, who turns 20 on Thursday, has yet to make his NRL debut, but he has been the Warriors' 18th man on several occasions.

He played in all but one of the Auckland Lions' 22 matches in the New South Wales Premier League last season, scoring 14 tries, and he was named the Warriors' under-20 player of the year.

He impressed for the Junior Warriors in their curtain-raiser against the Storm in Melbourne last night, scoring two tries in a 32-22 loss.

Cleary said Fai, a Junior Kiwi since 2005, had been pushing for a first-grade spot for some time and deserved the opportunity.

‘‘He's ready for this chance,'' Cleary said.

‘‘We've put a lot of work into his game in the off-season, and we had always planned to give him exposure in the NRL this season.''

Price's absence also means prop Ruben Wiki moves from the bench to the starting 13 and takes over the captaincy.

Last year, the Warriors had a good run with injuries and used only 23 players.

This season, they have already lost fullback Wade McKinnon for the entire campaign and now Price.

McKinnon's replacement, Aidan Kirk, got his first taste of the NRL against the Storm.

‘‘It's tough when you lose good players, but we're also pleased with the options we have,'' Cleary said.

The Warriors and Parramatta last met in the first week of the finals last September, with the Eels winning 12-10 at Mt Smart Stadium.

The two clubs shared their two regular season meetings last year, with the home side winning on each occasion.

- New Zealand Warriors halfback Grant Rovelli was yesterday charged with a careless high tackle, but he is unlikely to miss any National Rugby League (NRL) matches.

The NRL match review committee charged Rovelli with a grade one careless high tackle in the 58th minute of yesterday's 18-32 loss to the Melbourne Storm.

If the club issues an early guilty plea today, Rovelli will escape any suspension and will be free to face Parramatta in Auckland on Sunday.

Storm captain Cameron Smith was the other player charged after yesterday's match but will also escape suspension with an early guilty plea.

He was handed a grade one contrary conduct charge, relating to a grapple tackle in the 30th minute.

Parramatta five-eighth Feleti Mateo today pleaded guilty to his grapple tackle charge and will be free to take on the Warriors.

Wests Tigers prop Todd Payten will bid to clear his name at the NRL judiciary tomorrow night after he was charged with a grade two ‘crusher' tackle.

Payten will risk a three match suspension by fighting the charge.
