The South Pacific Raiders' fitness and organisation were too much for a tiring Kia Toa Tigers, as they won 52-6 at the Oval on Saturday.

Kia Toa's initial enthusiasm was interrupted when the speedy Dave Lipanovic made the most of a rush defence and found himself over the line in the right-hand corner.

Kia Toa looked to organise better, making the most of its first real possession of the match. Shane Unahi was dominant on offence as he blitzed his opposite side with massive hit-ups and lead his team close to the line.

Halfback Joel Taniora waltzed through a weak defence and over the line and stand-off Taua Piri made the conversion to take the lead. Aggressive spot tackles were not enough for Kia Toa, as it was let down by discipline.

A well-oiled Raiders side made the most of a botched tackle when Ben McKerchar and Richard Clarke linked together to create an overlap, shifting the ball to Ben Garrett for a try.

Louis Tili looked like he wanted to test the Kia Toa wings by sending several long passes out wide to winger Asa Vete.

It did not look like it was over for Kia Toa when Joe Fisi made a break but handling errors left his team wanting.

Edward Perkins punished on the high ball when he scored under the posts just before half time to bring the score to 22-6.

Manassah Kutia was the first to cross in the second half, as he found himself virtually unchallenged. Tiaki Cameron and Vete worked effectively on the pitch as they teamed up for numerous tackles and made sure Kia Toa's attack was unproductive. Ben McKerchar seemed to have a hand in the next three tries, bringing the score to 46-6.

Lance Barbarich and Sam Brame continued to push forward as their side's battering rams. Kia Toa looked to get a consolation when Antony Grae, Fisi and Pauli Lutui linked up but they were too sloppy and lost the ball.

The final nailed was knocked into the coffin when Vete scored an almost 100m intercept try to bring the final score to 52-6.

In the first match of the round, University defeated East Coast Eagles 30-14 at Logan Park, on a cold Thursday night.
