Thank goodness. The Warriors have stopped their losing run - and proved they can win in golden point.

The New Zealand club beat Penrith 20-16, after being forced to extra time for the fourth time in five weeks.

Shaun Johnson came up with the match winning play in the second half of the golden point period, feinting a drop goal attempt before slashing through from 20m out.

It's an vital boost, as another golden point loss might have been the end of the road for this team.

It means the Auckland side with stay on track for the playoffs, and will lift confidence ahead of a tough trip to the Gold Coast next week.

The Warriors were the better side for most of the match, but kept letting Penrith back into the contest.

The home side should have been in the clear at halftime, but couldn't capitalise on extended periods of dominance.

Bodene Thompson and Albert Vete were late inclusions in the Warriors lineup, replacing the originally named Bunty Afoa and James Gavet. Gavet in particular was unlucky to miss out, after having probably his best match of the year against the Raiders last week.

After Nathan Cleary knocked over an early penalty for the Panthers, the Warriors got the first try of the match through David Fusitua. Recalled fullback Tui Lolohea provided the impetus with a sharp run, before Fusitua leapt impressively to claim a Thomas Leuluai bomb.

It should have been a boost for the home side, but for the next period they were masters of their own misfortune. There were knock-ons at the play the ball, passes thrown into touch and players forced over the sideline on the first tackle.

It meant that the Warriors could build any momentum, despite being dominant in possession and territory. The Panthers were all at sea - they only managed a 59% completion rate in the first half - but the home side couldn't establish a match defining lead. The Warriors finally got some reward for their efforts with a slick Ken Maumalo try in the 36th minute. From a set scrum move, several decoys and a Johnson burst put Maumalo in the clear for his first touchdown of the season. The 10-2 halftime lead, in drizzly conditions, didn't seem enough given the run of play in the first half.

Penrith made some early inroads on the scoreboard early in the second spell, with Cleary producing a show and go to create the hole and Tyrone Peachey finishing off out wide.

The Warriors looked to have re-established their dominance with another well worked try, Fusitua reminding of Clinton Toopi in his prime as he stormed onto a Lolohea pass.

An Luke penalty extended the Warriors lead to eight but it didn't last, Josh Mansour brushing off five defenders in a storming 50 metre run to keep the Panthers close.

Penrith sensed a chance, and from a booming Cleary kick - which forced a Lolohea mistake and gave them possession inside the Warriors quarter - Mansour flashed over for his second try of the night.

Both team missed field goal attempts before the match was sent to golden point.
The home missed a gilt edged opportunity in the first period, with Luke inexplicably getting caught with the ball on the fifth tackle under the goal posts, with Johnson poised 25 metres out.

The heavens opened for the last five minutes, which made it even more of a lottery. Johnson had a one point snap charged down, but when given a similar chance on the next set dummied then evaded four Penrith defenders to make the line.

Warriors 20 (D Fusitua 2, K Maumalo, S Johnson tries; I Luke 2 goals)
Penrith 16 (T Peachey, J Mansour 2 tries, N Cleary 2 goals)
Halftime: 10-2
