The leading Dunedin and Christchurch rugby league clubs, plus a few former Warriors stars, will contest the second Queenstown 9s Carnival on Saturday.

Chief organiser Paisa Bedggood said Queenstown was more of a rugby town, the town's league team was in remission, but he wanted to fill the gap left after the resort lost the national rugby sevens hosting rights a few years ago.

Ten teams, up from eight last year, are playing this Saturday.

Bedggood expected Christchurch teams Hornby Panthers, who won last year, Riccarton Knights and Linwood Keas and Dunedin's Kia Toa Tigers, South Pacific Raiders and East Coast Eagles to be strong title contenders.

However, a Warriors Old Boys side will provide the star power.

The side includes former Warriors and New Zealand Kiwis players Awen Guttenbeil, Mark Horo, Whetu Taewa, John Simmons and Gavin Hill.

The tournament starts at 9am on Saturday at the Queenstown Recreation Ground.

There will be 20 games spread over two pools, followed by two preliminary finals and a final at 7.20pm.
