James Black (9), of Mosgiel, shows his skills to win the cadet class at the Dunedin Kart Club’s annual night meeting at the Silverstream track on Saturday.

The meeting is one of only two in the country which take place mostly in darkness.

About 50 drivers, aged from 6 to 60, took part.

The main race was for the Thomson Memorial, named after two former members who were killed when returning from a meeting in Invercargill many years ago.

Contested over five races it came down to the final race of the night to decide a winner.

It was a straight shootout between Mark Ahlfeld, of Mosgiel, and Dan Carter, of Hampden.

Ahlfeld who came out on top.

It was the first win of the trophy for Ahlfeld, who has been competing for many seasons.

The next major event at the track is in November, when a one-hour endurance race will take place.
