Motorcycling: Lee shares 2nd place

Dunedin motorcycle rider Michael Lee finished second-equal in the Burt Munro street races in Wyndham on Sunday.

Lee, driving a Kawasaki 600, was in the top three of the four races contested. The title was taken by Ryan Hampton, of Christchurch, who won all four races.

Lee bagged two second places and two thirds to share second place with Seth Devereux, from Christchurch, in the open class.

Lee said the tight Wyndham circuit made for some tough racing and Hampton, riding a 1000cc vehicle, had the power on the straights to get away.

Hampton could be caught on the corners, Lee said, but was too fast elsewhere.

Lee (50) admits he is the old man of the racing and finds it hard going against younger and better-resourced riders.

But he more than held his own at the weekend, and said he was next aiming for the Wanganui street races on Boxing Day, finance permitting.
