New Zealand motocrosser Ben Townley has signed to race three rounds of the world MX1 championship in Europe before he resumes his racing career in the United States.
Townley, who signalled full recovery from a serious shoulder injury that has sidelined him since mid-2008 by winning the New Zealand Supercross title last week, will be a member of the factory Honda team in Europe.
The world MX1 championship which begins in Bulgaria in the first weekend of April will be the first time Townley has raced in Europe since he represented New Zealand in the Motocross of Nations in England in late 2006.
Townley, 25, was a dominant force in Europe, winning the world MX2 title in 2004 and was runner-up in the world MX1 title chase the following season when he won four grand prix in a tight battle with Belgian legend Stefan Everts and fellow-Kiwi Josh Coppins.
"I'm really looking forward to going to Europe," Townley said.
"It is a perfect fit for me right now to get back to racing and will help me prepare for the outdoor champs in the United States.
"I have been racing in New Zealand and getting back to speed which has been part of my plan to get myself back into racing shape. "
Townley was eager to renew acquaintances with his fans in Europe and hoped to give a good showing in the three rounds.
" The Euro fans are so passionate about racing and I have good fan base there, which will be a great way to get back into international racing.
"I have raced in Sevlievo, (Bulgaria) and Valkenswaard (The Netherlands) before, so I know those tracks well and have been on the podium in Sevlievo and twice in Valkenswaard.
"Fermo (Italy) will be new to everyone so I hope to get good results there too."
Besides Coppins who will be with his new Aprilia team, Townley will also have to contend with reigning world MX1 champion Antonio Cairoli, a n old foe from his MX2 days.
Townley, who will be on board a Honda CRF450, will mentor young American Jimmy Albertson.
Team owner Paolo Martin was looking forward to Townley's presence in his team.
"This is a great opportunity for us to improve and develop our bike - Ben is an experienced rider and his advice and feedback will be precious."
Team manager Lorenzo Resta said he had tried to get Townley to sign for a full season but was happy to have got the New Zealander for at least the first three rounds with an eye to the future.
"This is a first step in the direction of 2011 when the race calendars of the American Motorcycle Association and MX1 will hopefully be compatible."
Once his European comitments are completed, Townley will head to the United States to link up with his new Troy Lee Designs/Lucas Oils/Honda team.
