The South has served up its share of talented netball sisters in recent times and now two more have hit the radar.

Cindy (18) and Laura (16) Weller were both named to the A grade talented players list at the South Island Secondary Schools Championships held in Dunedin earlier this month.

The Blue Mountain College siblings helped their school to 10th out of 32 teams in its first year in the grade.

That is an impressive result for most schools.

It is even more so for a small rural school competing against the South Island's powerhouses.

The sisters were key components to that.

Both are shooters, although Cindy was starting to play a bit of defence as well.

Blue Mountain's success followed its winning the B grade last year and the step up was something Cindy said the team had relished.

''There was quite a few hard teams, so it was good to have a challenge and play those harder teams.''

It was the culmination of several years together for many of the players and five would be leaving school at the end of the year.

Among those was Cindy, although Laura had another two years left at the school.

''It was good. It was the last year for most of us. It was special to finish strong,''Cindy said.

The individual honours had been unexpected for both, although they had been excited to make the talented players list together.

Alongside that they are coached by their mother, Vicki, and Cindy said it was good getting to learn from her.

Both play representative netball for Eastern Southland and Cindy has also linked with Invercargill.

Twins Kate and Georgia Heffernan, who also drew attention as school players, originally attended Blue Mountain College as well, before moving to St Hilda's Collegiate.

They have both since worn Southern Steel colours in their first year out of school.

Cindy will be the first to get a shot at doing that, when she moves to Dunedin next year to study and will trial for the South Beko League team.

Meanwhile, Laura will look to carry on her school's success.

Other Otago players to make the A grade talented players list were: Abby Anderson (Columba College), Megan Borst (St Hilda's Collegiate), Taneisha Fifita (Waitaki Girls' High School), Kaya Laban (South Otago High School), Meg Sycamore (Columba College) and Taylor Thorne (Otago Girls' High School).
