Three returning players have been named in the South squad to defend its Beko League title.

Sophie Erwood, Dani Gray and Zoey Flockton are all back and are joined by nine newcomers in head coach Georgie Salter's side.

Four secondary school pupils have been named in the squad. Verdon High School's Aliyah Dunn, Waitaki Girls' High School's Taneisha Fifita and St Hilda's Collegiate twins Kate and Georgia Heffernan will provide plenty of youth, although are all awaiting approval from Netball New Zealand.

Ngawai Eyles, from Invercargill, Eastern's Ella Brown and Ashleigh Smith and Dunedin's Olivia Bates and Tarryn Dickson make up the remainder of the squad.

Kiana Pelasio, Lucy Heenan, Laura Moffatt and Sarah Boomer were named as wider squad members.

It could also call upon Southern Steel youngsters Abbey Erwood, Jamie Hume and Jennifer O'Connell at stages, depending on the ANZ Premiership schedule.

The team played the Steel in a pre-season match in Oamaru on Sunday, which was won 77-39 by the Steel. Salter was satisfied with the performance.

``It's early days but it's exciting to be coaching them because you can see the potential there,'' she said.

``While we know the Steel were in pre-season mode, trying new things, and weren't the hardened disciplined team they will be, our girls were up to the task. I'm really pleased with the progress shown.

``It was a good indicator for me. There's a lot to work on but we certainly have some real home-grown talent there.''

It begins its season on March 25 when it plays Mainland in Christchurch. Its first home game is on April 8 in Gore against Waikato-Bay of Plenty, then it has matches in Dunedin on May 7 and June 11. The league sees it play 10 games against the other five teams, before the grand final on June 18 in Auckland.

The team will be in action at the Edgar Centre this weekend in two pre-season matches against the Mainland team. Its first game, on Saturday, has been moved from 11am to 4pm in order give Mainland more time to travel down. On Sunday the sides will go at it again at 2pm.
