Former championship winning coach Lauren Piebenga has returned to the Beko League.

She will take over the head role of the newly renamed Southern Blast in next year's competition.

After coaching the team to a win in the inaugural Beko League - the ANZ Premiership's development competition - she has spent the past two seasons as the Southern Steel assistant coach.

Piebenga will be joined by former Silver Ferns shooter Jo Morrison, while Queenstown's Paula Kay-Rogers will manage the side.

She felt there was a good base of ability to work with in the southern zone.

''I think the talent we've got both in our zone and coming into our zone in 2019 is really exciting and I'm looking forward to working with this group,'' Piebenga said.

''We've got a lot of experience from the previous seasons which we can build on.

''Pathways are becoming clearer in New Zealand netball and within our zone and we're seeing a lot of drive from these players to succeed.''

She has named 32 triallists to contest the 16 spots in the squad.

The trials will be held on January 26 and 27 in Dunedin.

That included the 23 players named in the team's initial offseason training squad, alongside nine others invited.
