Southern Steel goal attack Gina Crampton was the biggest casualty in the Silver Ferns Quad Series squad.

Crampton was replaced in the 14-player squad, named yesterday, by Grace Kara (nee Rasmussen), who returns after missing the Constellation Cup series.

Steel midcourter Shannon Francois and shooter Te Paea Selby-Rickit were both included.

Defender Jane Watson - who is shifting back to the Mainland Tactix for 2018 - was also named.

A squad of 16 had a camp in Auckland last week, alongside 10 development players.

Of those 16, Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic shooter Monica Faulkner was the other to join Crampton in missing out.

Coach Janine Southby said it was decided to take a bigger squad of 14, as the Ferns look to continue their preparations for the Commonwealth Games in April.

''This is a big tour in terms of the travel, with short turnarounds between flying from New Zealand, playing in England and then on to South Africa.

''For that reason we are travelling with 14. This will enable us to continue to develop and build depth and combinations across the squad.

''The Commonwealth Games is the immediate focus, but we're also mindful the 2019 Netball World Cup is not that far away, either.

''The more time we get with our athletes and continuing to fine-tune their readiness and preparation is all part of the bigger picture.''

The Quad Series will be played in January in both England and South Africa.

Alongside the two host countries, the Silver Ferns - who won the September edition - will also play Australia.
