Oamaru schoolgirl Taneisha Fifita is the only player from the southern region  in this year’s New Zealand schools netball squad.

The 23-strong squad was named yesterday and Fifita joins Georgia Stroud, from Villa Maria College in the Mainland zone, as the only players from the South Island.

Fifita, a defender, who attends Waitaki Girls’ High School, is a development player for the Southern Steel.

The final national schools squad will be named after the NZ age-group championships in July in the build-up to matches against the Australian under-17 squad in Canberra in September.

Players were selected from all the national age-group competitions, regional secondary school tournaments and last year’s national schools tournament.
