Promoted Phys Ed Blue provides strong competition for A side

Phys Ed A fought off a late comeback from Phys Ed Blue to win 54-48 in the premier A competition on Saturday.

Phys Ed Blue was the latest addition to the competition after winning its spot in promotion-relegation on Tuesday. Both teams started strong and went into the first quarter break 12-all. Phys Ed A’s centre Kate Heffernan continued her great form, feeding accurately into her sister Georgia Heffernan at goal attack and Sarah Boomer at goal shoot. Georgia Heffernan drove hard into the pocket pulling both Phys Ed Blue defenders out of the circle, leaving Boomer alone under the post. Boomer had a solid game, scoring 36 goals out of 45 attempts.

Phys Ed Blue gained plenty of  ball in defence during the second quarter but it was unable to  reap a reward at the other end of the court. Phys Ed A pulled away and went into the halftime break up 28-21.

In the third quarter, Georgia Heffernan moved across to wing attack and took over the main feeding role from her sister. Jo Morrison entered the game for Phys Ed Blue in the second half. She provided the stability at the back that was missing in the first half and finished with 22 out of 25 goals.

Both teams played a defensive zone in the mid-court, making it hard to drive through the middle easily. Phys Ed A goal defence Abbi Souchon tracked goal attack Marcia Jerram well, making it hard for feeders to get the ball directly to her. The injection of Anita VandeBeld at goal keep for Phys Ed Blue added the extra height in the goal circle, which was needed. She pulled in a couple of intercepts, helping the momentum shift to be with her team.

Phys Ed A was winning by 10 goals at one point but Phys Ed Blue had a big final quarter, winning 16 goals to 10. The direction of ball into the goal circle was more accurate and rewarded through Morrison.

A blocked tip from Phys Ed A’s wing defence Ella Brown stopped the flow  Blue had and helped her team pull away to take the win. It was the closest any team has come to beating Phys Ed A this season.

Earlier in the day, College A beat University Albion A 68-57 and Southern Magpies beat St Hilda’s Collegiate School A 76-30.
