South up against it to defend title

South faces a tough task over the next month if it is to defend its Beko League title.

Having won three of its six games, it is left needing to win its remaining four to have a chance of making the final.

Even then, it needs to rely on other results going its way.

It is coming off an impressive 60-40 win over the Mainland team on Sunday, however, and looks to be improving.

Coach Georgie Salter said while the results had been disappointing, the side had made great strides on the development side.

''No, definitely not happy,'' she said of the team's results.

''But it is understandable given we're a very new team coming together.

''The key players that came in from last year, they had been affected by injuries and are trying to find their way within the new team identity.

''And then weaving those experienced ones from last year in with the new ones from this year.''

The team had dropped its first two games after going up in the first quarter.

It had lost key shooter Jennifer O'Connell, from the Steel, to injury two days before the first of those games.

She had been a huge loss, although Salter thought the team could have won had it taken better care of the ball throughout those games.

The players had learnt plenty from the games though and the team had gained valuable experience at the higher level.

''I think we've seen some huge growth and we're very happy about the growth of our players.

''We've got four schoolgirls and they're up there competing and contesting and doing all the things we need them to develop, which is really good.

''Then we've got those that were in the team last year, but playing in a different position.

''We can say, for example, Dani Gray plays mostly in the goal circle, backed up at wing defence, and is now a fully-fledged wing defence player.

''So she's made huge movement in that she identifies as a wing defence now and identifies the job that needs to be done.

''Things like that are really, really good development within a team.''

Aliyah Dunn and Ngawai Eyles have got court time for the Steel, while Gray and Sophie Erwood had also gone to Australia with the side in the pre-season.

Salter said several players were putting their hands up to go to the next level, but they needed to keep challenging themselves to get there.

That development will be key from a results standpoint, too, as South looks to keep alive its chances of a second straight title.

''We've got to win all of our games. I think that's a fantastic challenge, anyway.

''We've had enough wins to know we can do it if we put everything together as a team and keep improving as we go along.''
