St Kevin’s dominates Maheno

St Kevin’s was too strong in its North Otago premier game against Maheno Rebels, winning 41-16.

The school team raced to a 13-2 lead after the first quarter, and allowed Rebels only five points in the second quarter, going to halftime with a 22-7 lead.

St Kevin’s piled on the goals in the third quarter, leading 32-11 before cruising to the finish.

Tessa Souness and Zaria Kira shot well for the school team, while consistent play by Olivia Mavor in the midcourt helped grab plenty of turnovers.

Rachel Carling fought hard on defence for Rebels and Aleisha Lucas produced plenty of tips, while Emma Slater led well throughout the court and found good space.

In a tight finish, Athletic Maroon held on to a 26-25 win over Waitaki Girls’ Lightning Strike to grab its first win of the season.

Ella Francis had a strong game, pulling in numerous intercepts and driving the ball through the court.

Lightning Strike started poorly, especially at the centre pass, but came back well. Kaitlyn King produced some beautiful cutting and driving and was supported by midcourt partner Sarah Jameson, while the defensive duo of Diana Fonua and Jorja Bell picked up plenty of intercepts.

Valley Karaka beat Kurow A 42-27 having led 22-13 at halftime.

Mikayla Cleveland was inspirational at goal attack for Karaka, controlling the attack end and finding partner Kara Cox with ease.

Kat Kawau returned from injury to the midcourt to lead Maheno Green to a 43-31 win over Valley Koru.

Kate Lawrence was also strong at wing attack for Green, which led 22-11 at halftime, while Ella Brown had a fine game at goal keep.

In the all-Valley clash, Karaka beat Koru 44-20, while the North Otago men beat Waitaki Girls’ Wildfire 44-29.
