The Southern Steel is back home but the task does not get any easier.

After battling past the Northern Mystics to remain unbeaten last week, the side plays the Waikato-Bay of Plenty Magic in Invercargill tonight.

Also unbeaten, the Magic has played one extra game and is shaping as a team to beat.

''They're looking quite sharp at the moment,'' Steel coach Reinga Bloxham said.

''They've obviously had three wins on the trot; they're looking quite good.

''We're looking forward to it and I think it's going to be an absolute epic battle.''

The Steel scored a remarkable 149 goals in its first two games, with Jhaniele Fowler-Reid providing 112 of them.

Tonight will probably be its toughest scoring test of the early season as it comes up against the Magic defensive duo of Casey Kopua and Kelly Jury.

Kopua brings with her experience and quality, while Jury keeps getting better and at 1.92m is second to only Fowler-Reid among the league's tallest players.

''I think they have got a great defensive line-up and they had a strong defensive game against the Pulse.

''We've got to pay respect to Casey Kopua, she's a class act, and Jury's also doing a really great job in the circle with her.

''But I think we've got a great attacking line-up that has the ability to change their game if they need to and adapt and use variety, so that's something we're looking at.''

The Steel defence will have its hands full with classy South African shooter Lenzie Potgieter, while Grace Rasmussen has been strong in the midcourt.

However, it showed its ability to grind out a tough win last week, with its fitness coming through in the final three minutes.

Being home would make a difference to the Steel too, in its only home game in its first five.

''I think the good thing is the girls were well prepared around [the tough schedule]; we had the schedule nice and early.

South has notched its first win of the 2017 Beko League.

The team beat Waikato-Bay of Plenty 53-51, coming back after trailing by six at the end of the first quarter.

Aliyah Dunn shot 39 goals from 42 attempts, while the Steel's Jamie Hume had 14 from 22 and assisted on 13 more. The win was the side's first of the season.
