Taurua would need release from contract

Netball New Zealand has plenty to ponder, but there could be barriers to getting back one of its top coaches for next year.

Noeline Taurua has been touted by many as the best option to take the Silver Ferns head coaching role should Janine Southby vacate the position after a disastrous Commonwealth Games.

Having been passed over for the job when Southby was appointed in late 2015, Taurua had a one-year stint at the Southern Steel, then headed to Australia where she coaches the Sunshine Coast Lightning.

In her second year with the team, she told the Otago Daily Times when in Dunedin last month that she had extended her contract until the end of 2019.

At that point she will return to New Zealand, although she was not sure what she would be doing.

With the World Cup next year, her proposed move back seems timed perfectly to take over after that cup campaign.

Netball New Zealand is conducting a review of the Games campaign, to be completed in early June.

Over the past few days, many have called for Southby to be replaced, after the team failed to finish in the medal placings.

Taurua would need to gain a release from her contract, or take on both jobs for a year, if that was to happen and she was to take the position.

Southby did not respond to calls from the Otago Daily Times yesterday.

However, she said after the loss to Jamaica in the bronze-medal match that she would reflect on the campaign before making any decisions on her future.
