The sixth and penultimate round of the Southland-wide netball league was played on Thursday night at Stadium Southland.

The most anticipated match was between the defending champion Gore Ex-High and Rata. The scores were locked heading into the fourth quarter of the hard-fought match, but Rata came out on top 36-32.

Rata coach Debbie Munro said it was a great team effort by her side.

"The girls were controlled and patient getting the ball to their shoots. Georgia Yaxley and Georgia Dowling had great games in the defensive circle, while Hayley Crofts was inspirational in the middle on defence and attack," she said.

Ex-High coach Colleen Bond said Rata's effective defensive zone forced turnovers throughout, but her team fought hard to salvage a well-earned bonus point.

Invercargill St Mary's was too good for Winton, winning 62-41. St Mary's made a rusty start and Winton defender Sonia Roberts was able to pull in multiple intercepts.

Winton goal shoot Britney Davis was strong and accurate, and helped her team to stay within one goal at quarter time.

St Mary's ramped up the intensity after the break, especially at the defensive end. Sarah Hamilton and Kelsi Ridden suffocated the Winton attack and the Dunn sisters, Aliyah and Tyra, potted the goals to earn a 29-19 lead at halftime.

St Mary's won the third quarter by three goals and buried the tiring Winton team 20-12 in the final quarter thanks to some great long range shooting from Bay-leigh Johnson.

Mossburn beat Central Southland College 54-48 to firm up its fourth semifinal position.

After losing the first quarter by seven goals, Mossburn stepped up the midcourt defensive pressure and earned multiple turnovers. Newcomer Hayley Adam played well at wing attack and fed accurately to the shooters Sophie Erwood and Rachael Dawson.

The Gore St Mary's side earned its first win of the competition, beating Southland Girls' High School 50-32.
