The somewhat strange world of competitive disc golf came to Dunedin yesterday —  Whare Flat to be precise.

The inaugural Hylander disc golf tournament started at the Waiora Scout Camp yesterday. Disc golf is similar to real golf but players throw  discs rather than hitting balls with clubs. At the scout camp yesterday, an 18-hole course had been laid out and  about 50 players from all over the country and further afield were lining up to play.

The sport involves throwing  a disc or frisbee across a fairway, or field, and landing it in a caged target.

There are no greens like golf but there are more discs in the bag than a golfer would have clubs. The discs — there can be unlimited numbers — are of varying shapes, sizes and weights, used depending on lengths of flight and accuracy.

Most of the holes on the temporary course at the scout camp were par 3 and par 4s.

There is a short disc golf course at Chingford Park in Dunedin.

The tournament started yesterday with a doubles tournament, with pairs of players having alternate shots.

Over the next two days, four rounds of singles will  be played.
